Why Pantone Still Reigns Supreme: The Art (and Science) of Perfect Colour in Print

If you’ve ever fallen in love with a brand’s colour, you’ve experienced the power of consistency. That’s not luck. That’s Pantone.

The Gold Standard of Colour Matching

Pantone has been the universal language of colour for designers and printers for over 60 years. Each swatch in the Pantone Matching System (PMS) represents a precisely formulated ink, mixed from 13 base pigments to create thousands of exact shades.

In luxury printing, where every detail matters, Pantone is our gold standard. Whether we’re printing a fine art book, a limited-edition slipcase, or a custom packaging project, Pantone gives us a target that ensures colour accuracy from screen to press to finished product.

But Here’s the Catch: Adobe and Pantone Broke Up

Recently, Adobe and Pantone ended their long-standing partnership. As a result, Pantone libraries are no longer included in Adobe Creative Cloud apps by default. Designers now face an unexpected challenge: many can’t easily select Pantone colours digitally.

We’ve noticed the ripple effect in real time. Clients often send us brand colour specs that include HEX or RGB values, which are great for web and digital use, but not for print. Without a Pantone reference, matching brand colours on press becomes a guessing game. CMYK builds can only get so close without a defined target, and when perfection is expected (and it always is), “close” just doesn’t cut it.

Why This Matters for Luxury Printing

In high-end print, especially luxury book printing and premium packaging, colour precision isn’t just an aesthetic choice; it’s a brand promise. The warm gold foil on a collector’s edition cover. The deep navy on a fashion brand’s packaging. The subtle blush tint on a high-end skincare box.

Those colours tell a story—and they deserve to be told accurately.

When Pantone is part of the process, we can calibrate every press and proof to match that exact shade. It means no surprises when your finished piece arrives. Just the satisfaction of seeing your brand brought to life exactly as you imagined.

Our Offer: Let’s Get Your Brand Colours Print-Ready

At MET Fine Printers, we’re bridging the gap between digital design and print perfection.
If your brand guidelines list only RGB or HEX values, we can help translate them into Pantone and CMYK equivalents that will perform beautifully in print. Think of it as a colour audit that ensures your brand is as consistent on paper as it is online.

We’ll provide:

  • Expert conversion from digital colour codes to Pantone and CMYK builds

  • Advice on when to use spot colour vs. process colour for best results

  • Press proofs to ensure accuracy before production

  • A permanent reference for your brand’s print-ready colours

The MET Difference

While it has been said that perfection doesn’t exist, we believe it does. As a luxury printer, we don’t believe in “good enough”, we believe in craftsmanship, precision, and collaboration. Our team has spent decades mastering the subtle art of ink, paper, finishing and process because great printing starts with great understanding. And that includes understanding your colour.

So, before you start your next project let’s talk about your colours before we talk about your paper. Your brand deserves nothing less than perfection and Pantone still sets that bar.
