Community
At Metropolitan we believe the more you give, the more you get back. Since its earliest days, the company has supported a number of charitable initiatives and non-profit organizations that make Vancouver a better place to live.
When Canuck Place Children's Hospice opened its doors, Metropolitan helped fund the library's initial inventory and made a lifelong commitment to replenish and update its book and video collection. More recently, the company took on the role of founding sponsor for the local chapter of Canstruction, an international initiative aimed at reducing hunger in communities. Since its inception, Canstruction Vancouver has raised more than 600,000 cans for donation to Lower Mainland food banks.
This philosophy towards corporate responsibility is also practiced closer to home. Creating a motivating, ethical work environment for employees is paramount, from profit sharing opportunities to ongoing training.
Metropolitan's efforts to make a difference have not gone unnoticed: the company was recognized with an Ethics in Action award, the first printer to receive this honour.
Community Outreach Highlights
Be it through donations or providing printing in kind, Metropolitan supports a variety of charitable initiatives and non-profit organizations. Highlights include:
- Founding sponsor of Canstruction® Vancouver , an innovative worldwide project that aims to feed hungry people in local communities. The event draws on the talents of teams of designers, architects and corporate employees, who build huge sculptures made entirely of non-perishable food items. All canned goods are subsequently donated to local banks. To date, more than 600,000 cans have been raised for donation to Lower Mainland food banks.
- Community Contributor to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Bid;
- Silver sponsor of Pacific Press' Vancouver Sun Run, the largest community 10K run in Canada. Profits from the Sun Run go towards supporting literacy and amateur athletics;
- Platinum sponsor of the Graphic Designers of Canada/BC chapter;
- Long-time participant in the BC Lions Society 24 Hour Relay for the Kids, for which Met employees have raised more than $150,000.
- Corporate sponsor for the 1996 International AIDS Conference and the American Institute of Graphic Arts' 2003 Power of Design national conference;
- Funding for the purchase of more than 300 books and videos for Canuck Place Children's Hospice;
- First corporate site in Canada for guide dog training through the Canadian National Institute for the Blind;
- Sponsorship of the Metropolitan Scholarship Fund for graphic design students;
- Donation of printing services for the Disabled Skiers Association, Children's Hospital Make-A-Wish Foundation, Operation Smile, among others;
- Printing at cost for numerous cultural and healthcare organizations, including the Vancouver Sympony, Vancouver Art Gallery and NABS (National Advertising Benevolent Society).
Metropolitan also provides support for its employees' community outreach initiatives and ongoing skills enhancement/training programs. The company regularly hosts seminars featuring leading industry specialists or creates workshops during which the latest technologies are showcased.
In fact, Metropolitan was the first printer in Canada whose press people completed two of the graphic industry's toughest training certification programs through the National Council for Skill Standards in Graphic Communications and Sheet-fed Skills Training Program from the Graphic Arts Technical Foundation.
